How do I use a Logic analyzer to program a micro controller?
I am using a IR LED to pick up the signal sent out from an A/C remote. The signal i found out can be read by a logic analyzer and used to program a microcontroller to send that signal. is this the correct route to take or is there a more efficient way from using the Oscilloscope.
I assume you have a signal as in the examples in the link below. I mean, the bits in the signal are square as in the diagram. I think it best to use an oscilloscope, so you can be sure the photo-diode is working properly. The diode needs to be loaded by a resistor across it so that it can work fast enough to show the waveforms properly. All bits should be the same height and square shaped. If the resistor loads the diode to about 50mV or less it should be fast enough. You have to experiment to find that value. Keep it the same distance but very close to the remote controller. A logic analyser is overkill for this and unnecessarily confusing. It works with digital signals. If the logic analyser has a function so it can decode these protocols it would be helpful though, once you converted the IR signal to a digital signal). I expect it needs some sort of analogue signal processing. The oscilloscope does not need this.
Next you need to record the sequences for different buttons and then program a microprocessor or other hardware to generate that code while driving an IR led. If you don't need to decode it that is simpler. There are several protocols used with address and data sections of the sequence for example. The air-conditioner will be controlled by the data sequence, while the address makes sure just that particular unit is controlled, not the TV or something else.
There is an example program using assembler language for decoding in the link below, but it refers to a specific protocol type. You will have to learn how to program a pic (micro-controller) device as in the article, but there are many websites that explain how to do that. Basically the pic is programmed from a PC using a serial port and either an on board programmer or a separate programming unit the chip is plugged into. The website in the first link has most of the information you need, but it may not apply to your system, so you learn from that, or search for something more suitable. If you can identify the protocol that will make it easier to search for example code. You can search for more protocol descriptions too.
It might be possible to program the pic to record code sequences from the remote controller and replay them when you press a button connected to a pic digital input. This means you would need no knowledge of the code itself as it is not being decoded. It is more like a tape recorder, recording the details without understanding them.
The second link shows a data sheet for a 3 pin device (TSOP1840) used in the first link. It includes the IR receiver and converts its signal to a serial data stream ready for decoding. It needs to be selected for the specific carrier frequency. This simplifies the analog side of things considerably.
The third link shows an IR extender. This is an IR repeater, it just receives the signal and retransmits it, but it shows how the IR components connect.
One way to get a clean signal from your remote is to disconnect the IR diode and connect a resistor in its place, say 1K. Now connect the oscilloscope across that.
Note that IR leds are pulsed at heavy currents - so much so that they cannot be on all the time.
