Piano instructional software with real-time feedback?
What are some software programs that grant a digital piano learner real time feedback via usb or midi or other interfaces? In the 90s I bought a guitar fret that would interface with a pc (good concept but garbage hardware), is there something similar for piano?
I think that instructional software that interfaces with a digital piano via MIDI would be superior to a warm body instructor as the lesson is consistently available and a one-time fee.
Look at SmartMusic. There are modes in this excellent software that will assess your performance for ACCURACY by cmparing it to a silent track. You get a printout, if you wish, that shows your deviation from perfect accuracy. Of course, this does not assess things that are subjective - only objective - but it's a start.
NOTHING is superior to a live teacher - NOTHING. I have worked extensively with many, many music software programs, and hold multiple degrees in music education and music theory. I wrote my MM thesis at Boston University about CAI - computer -assisted instruction. My son is currently completing his MM degree in digital music, and is also a career music educator. we KNOW what is out ther, and just how far it can take a student. Having notation software than can divide a beat into 4096 parts is nice - but being able to play a gorgeous melodic phrase, and have flawless technique and exquisite taste - THAT does not come out of a box of circuitry. If it did, those of us who work in this area would have cash in and cashed OUT by now. Art is made by HUMAN BEINGS - although machines can make some part of craft.
